. :  How We Celebrated Oncology Nursing Day in 2011

De Souza Institute – Ontario

A live webcast and interactive nursing chat was held in  honour of OND 2011! During the webcast you could hear winning inspirational cancer care stories from the OND 2011 Contest winners and participate in a discussion about  oncology nursing leadership led by Dr. Joy Richards (one of the three de Souza co–chairs) from University Health Network and Dr. Mary Jane Esplen from de Souza Institute. You could also share your Cancer Care Story and Win: You could participate in a contest to win an iPod Touch by sharing a time when you made a difference in the cancer experience of a patient and/or their family.

York Central Hospital – Ontario

The York Central Hospital was celebrating Oncology Nursing Day by having a session on Complementary and Alternative Medicine in the Oncology Setting. This included a practical component of guided imagery for nurses.

Champlain Chapter – Ontario

An “Oncology 401” conference was organized with various professional development  presentations.

Edmonton – Alberta

The Alberta North Chapter hosted a pizza party for the nurses, handing out CANO lanyards and continuing with the membership drive.

Moncton Chapter – New Brunswick

The local chapter of CANO in Moncton, New Brunswick was holding a breakfast at the Moncton City Hospital for its Oncology nurses. During the breakfast a video was showed which was developed 2011 displaying photos of the staff, as well as video messages from our oncologists, management, patients, and family members. There were also door prizes given out to a couple of lucky winners. CANO/ACIO members were on hand to promote CANO/ACIO membership and answer any questions about CANO.

Juravinski Hospital and Cancer Centre

The Juravinski Hospital and Cancer Centre planned a day of activities for OND. A presentation about “Sleep in the context of cancer”, two on–line sessions, a drop–in pizza luncheon, a de Souza session as well as cake and coffee during the afternoon were featured on April 5, 2011.

BC Cancer Agency – British Columbia

The BC Cancer Agency held a dinner and a presentation from Sally Thorne, PhD, FCAHS, RN “Meeting the Needs of Our Patients: Cancer Nursing in Challenging Times”. The presentation was video–linked to all the other Cancer Agencies in British Columbia.

Oncology Nursing e–Mentorship Program

On OND, the Oncology Nursing e–Mentorship Program was providing an information session highlighting their Career Directions Online workshop live via the Ontario Telemedicine Network (OTN).

The Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario

The CHEO and local chapter of CANO/ACIO presented a morning coffee/tea break for all the oncology nurses.

Nova Scotia

The Capital Health Cancer Care Program recognized oncology nurses with the Cancer Care program by celebrating Oncology Nursing Day with a free pizza and pop Tuesday, April 3, 2011. There was information about CANO/ACIO, the CNA certification, the OND Mayoral Proclamation was displayed and there were some displays of projects and research being done by oncology nurses within the program.

Quebec Chapter

The Quebec Chapter, AQIO was holding its Annual Conference on April 8, 2011 as part of the celebration of Oncology Nursing Day. The theme was : Pérennité des soins en oncologie: bilan de la trajectoire parcourue (Sustainability of oncology nursing : Update on our strides thus far).

Carlo Fidani Peel Regional Cancer Centre/Credit Valley Hospital

A breakfast kicked off the day followed by the cutting of a cake, lovingly made by one of our generous volunteers. A dinner was held off site with guest speaker Diana Tikasz, a social worker from Hamilton Health Sciences Centre, who addressed the issue of Compassion Fatigue. The nurses were presenting at Oncology Grand rounds on the topic “Celebrating Our Voice”. Oncology nursing was promoted to our colleagues and community partners by sharing our values and standards of practice.

South West Health

The Yarmouth Regional Hospital planned a display in the hospital to recognize the nurses in Oncology, as well as an evening at the movies!

Toronto Chapter

The Toronto Chapter presented a dinner with speaker “Update on Multiple Myeloma” at the Delta Toronto East Hotel.

London Health Sciences Centre – Ontario

The London Health Sciences Centre held lunches for the in–patient nurses. A separate lunch was held in the Cancer Centre for those in the Ambulatory setting.

The Pediatric Oncology Group of Ontario

Tuesday, April 5, 2011: The Pediatric Oncology Group of Ontario held a webinar about “Caring for dying children, their families and ourselves”.
