Ontario – Toronto Chapter Champion; Marlene McCourt

Greater Toronto Chapter of Oncology Nurses 2017 Chapter Champion: Marlene McCourt
Marlene McCourt has been working in oncology at St. Michael’s Hospital for 25 years. She has been an active CANO member since its inception and has participated in nearly every event hosted in Toronto. Marlene is an enthusiastic advocate for GTCON and has recruited a number of St. Michael’s nurses to join CANO. It is Marlene’s dedication to St. Michael’s Medical Day Care Unit, commitment to her peers and passion for her patients that make her our chapter champion.

Marlene’s contribution to the oncology program at St. Michael’s hospital is unmatched. She has been on various committees, treated thousands of patients and continues to demonstrate an eagerness to learn. For the past few years she has represented the oncology and palliative care departments as their union rep and continues to motivate staff to participate in various events. Marlene goes beyond her role and continuously ensures the clinic is adequately stocked with supplies, as well as, patient comforts, including the coordination of knitted hats from different charitable groups.

Marlene is loved by staff and patients alike. To her coworkers, she is always willing to help and often works beyond her patient assignment. Marlene’s years of experience, calm demeanor and sense of humour make her a favourite among patients.  She is a wealth of knowledge and is especially informed on community resources. Marlene is often found sitting with patients discussing helpful apps for individuals receiving chemotherapy or support programs in Toronto even after her shift is over. She is a patient advocate and routinely voices her concerns in rounds and staff meetings. Patients habitually request Marlene to be their nurse and she happily obliges when she can. Furthermore, even years after treatment, many of her patients continue to visit her in the clinic.

This June marks Marlene’s retirement from St. Michael’s hospital. Despite her retirement, Marlene has expressed her desire to maintain membership with CANO in order to continue fueling her passion of Oncology Nursing. We are thrilled to recognize her contributions as this year’s Chapter Champion and give her the sendoff she deserves.

Alberta North Chapter Champion; Mike Harding

Mike Harding was first attracted to the field of oncology during his final preceptorship in 2011 at the Cross Cancer Institute. It was there that he became passionate for the unique way to care for patients and their families in an ambulatory care setting. Mike received his Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Alberta in that same year. He has been a proud member of the Outpatient Department at the Cross for 6 years now. Mike works primarily with Thyroid Cancer patients though he has also had extensive experience working in the hematology tumor group and more recently with the Genitourinary tumor group.

Mike has been a member of CANO since 2011. He is enthusiastic about learning and relishes the opportunity to go to the annual CANO conference. He has had the opportunity to attend the last 5 conferences and hopes to continue to share in the experiences from other nurses across Canada. Last year at CANO, Mike was nominated by his peers for the 2016 Pfizer Award of Excellence in Clinical Practice.

Another way in which Mike is excited to contribute to the field of Oncology is by participating in the Movember fundraising campaign, which raises awareness and funds for prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and mental health. In the last 5 years, Mike, along with the help of this husband, Don, their dog, Xander, and many talented and generous friends, have worked to create themed photos with Xander. To date, Mike has raised over $31,000.

PEI Chapter Champion; Elaine Smith

Elaine Smith is a true CANO PEI Chapter Champion! Elaine is one of the founding members of the CANO PEI Chapter. She has served in numerous executive positions over the years and most recently as treasurer. Elaine is one of the driving forces behind the PEI Breast Cancer Information Partnership. Elaine continues to work with this partnership as a co-facilitator and is a strong advocate for empowering PEI breast cancer patients with knowledge.

Elaine has been an active Oncology Nurse for over 30 years. She has worked both front line in the PEI Cancer Treatment Centre and currently works in the PEI Cancer Treatment Centre Pharmacy.

Elaine continues to be very involved with CANO PEI. She constantly advocates for continuing education for all Oncology Nurses in PEI. We are most fortunate to have Elaine on our team!
