Event: “Up Close and Personal at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre” Date: October 29th, 2014 Time: 5:00pm Location: TBCC Auditorium, Main Floor
ONIGA’s Fall Education event titled, “”Up Close & Personal at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre” was our chapter’s first student exclusive event.
This was fitting since our goal this year was to increase recruitment and retention. As well, this offered a means of increasing awareness and interest of oncology nursing, and also relationship building and networking with both local universities in Calgary. The students were taken on a tour of the cancer centre, had a presentation from a patient on their experience and cancer journey, a discussion on the importance of the oncology nursing role, explanation of the various oncology nursing roles at the centre and also a Q&A period with our expert oncology nurses.
We had 32 students attend the evening, and created an evaluation of the evening to gather data on student interests in oncology and gaps in knowledge for future education events. We felt this was a huge success in “Engaging for Excellence” at the university level to enhance interest and awareness of the great career oncology nursing provides!
