. : Letter from CANO/ACIO President
I invite you all to join us in celebrating our 17th Annual Oncology Nursing Day on Tuesday April 7, 2020. Our theme this year, “Now and Forever Oncology Nursing” emphasizes the invaluable contributions that oncology nurses have made and will continue to make in cancer care. My hope is that we will not need oncology nurses forever. It would be wonderful, in fact, if there was no longer a need for oncology nurses at all because that would mean there is no more cancer. It is a dream that I am unlikely to realize in my lifetime but one that I hope future generations will know as their reality.
In the meantime, the future, the ‘forever’, is now. Now is the time to use our knowledge, skills, and expertise to make the experience of a cancer diagnosis, treatment, and life beyond treatment, as good as it possibly can be, for all involved. Now is the time to use our voice and advocate for our patients and their loved ones, to ensure that the care they receive is the best care available, the care they deserve.
2020 marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale and has been declared “The Year of the Nurse and the Midwife” by the World Health Organization. Oncology Nursing Day provides an opportunity to celebrate our profession, share our collective goals and aspirations, dream about the future, all while remembering and honouring the patients and families who imbue immeasurable meaning in the work we do.
The CANO/ACIO Oncology Help Guide will give you ideas on how you can work to organize events and promote Oncology Nursing Day within your work setting. You will find below a list of possible events to organize as well as what was done in previous years.
These are just examples and we encourage you to share your ideas with us!
CANO/ACIO head office is also here to help. In the Help Guide, you will find full-size color posters that can be downloaded and printed.
Our goal is to gain media coverage throughout Canada and thus celebrate our voice. You can find past media coverage on the Oncology Nursing Day website under Media. To get a buzz about Oncology Nursing Day 2020 going on Twitter, please use #OND2020 and tag @CANO/ACIO.
