How We Celebrated Oncology Nursing Day in 2013

In 2013, we celebrated our 10th Annual Oncology Nursing Day on Tuesday April 2nd, 2013. Our theme was, “Oncology Nurses: Inspiring Change,” chosen by CANO/ACIO members and chapter presidents at the Council of Chapters meeting held during the annual conference in 2012.

Oncology nursing is by its very nature a rapidly changing field with increasing patient populations, novel treatments, shrinking resource pools, shifting models of care, and scientific discoveries emerging faster than can be translated to practice. With this year’s theme: “Oncology Nurses: Inspiring Change”, CANO/ACIO aimed to show the power of oncology nurses to reach out to each other as well as to help vulnerable patients and families.

Nursing interventions and interactions are directed at influencing health status and quality of life. Oncology Nursing is a career that has many facets, both scientific and interpersonal. It is an evolving specialty, a progressive growth area that offers many career opportunities. Oncology Nursing Day provides an opportunity to highlight our profession and share our experiences about the personally rewarding yet challenging work of oncology care delivery.

Without a doubt oncology nursing has made a broad and lasting imprint across the country. Oncology Nursing Day provides us with an opportunity to come together as partners to generate momentum, excitement and share our experiences about the personally rewarding yet challenging work of cancer care delivery.

Take a chance to inspire change, enhance people’s perceptions of our profession and raise our status not only within the medical community but also far beyond! We have made the 2013 Oncology Nursing Day commemoration another one to remember!

How We Celebrated Oncology Nursing Day in 2012

In 2012 we launched the Oncology Nursing Day website and YouTube channel on OND! One of the key feature of the Oncology Nursing Day website is oncology nursing stories that were submitted by CANO/ACIO members. The stories exemplified how nurses are leaders and how they support colleagues, patients and their families.

One of the highlights of 2012 Oncology Nursing Day this year was the flashmobs to Katy Perry’s Fireworks organized by members from various chapters and institutions. These flashmobs were a great fun way for members to celebrate the day. Seven flashmobs occurred across Canada on Oncology Nursing Day!
